What happens when a sound artist spends four weeks working at a company specialising in indoor positioning, a collective at Fraunhofer IWU reimagines a hundred-year-old material, or a geographer at the UFZ hears his water data for the first time rather than reading it? In 2024 and 2025, the FUNKEN Kolleg brought together artists with research institutes and technology companies in Chemnitz – without a specific task, without defined roles, and without a problem to solve. The catalogue ‘FUNKEN Kolleg. Results of artistic-technological collaborations in cross-sectoral dialogue’ documents the five collaborations with Pinpoint, the Fraunhofer IWU, the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research, the STFI and the companies on the Technology Campus, across 132 pages, in two languages, featuring interviews with all those involved and an interim assessment of what such collaborations require and what they achieve. Produced in cooperation with Kreatives Chemnitz, funded by the Free State of Saxony as part of the ‘Makers, Business & Arts’ programme for the European Capital of Culture 2025.
